At SolarGlass, the average tenure of the team is in the teens. This leads to relationships that are more like a large family than a small business. One interesting by-product of this dynamic is that for the most part, these long-term relationships leave people free to completely be themselves, for the better, mostly!

We have one sales person in particular that is a one-of-a kind free spirit. He is in his second career, his first being a roadie with a deep connection to the Grateful Dead. He has attended approximately 2,000 concerts, with a focus on the greats like Sonny Rollins and Phil Lesh.

Almost a month ago, he said something that I can’t stop thinking about – “really giving a shit + fun = success”. Something about it was a very powerful bit of business truth; I just could not put my finger on it. Thinking he had read it somewhere, I “Google’d” the phrase. That led me to this blog which brought the power of his phrase into sharp focus.  The genius of the phrase is this – you can fake customer care but you can’t fake really giving a shit! For me, this sums up the litmus test for are we “walking the talk” on Service Excellence. Take the time to read the Brand Builder’s blog post. Besides being a fellow Frenchman, Olivier Blanchard offers some powerful thinking of his own.

Honestly, really giving a shit + fun = success, may be the most powerful equation ever expressed!
